Custom Woodworking, Seat Weaving, and Furniture Repair
Zane Shapen is a woodworker based in Portland, Oregon, specializing in chair repair, Danish cord and cane seat weaving, re-finishing and other woodworking services.
Danish Cord weaving & Conversions
Many chairs can be converted to Danish cord to give them a whole new look. Sometimes these chairs were also produced with a woven seat from the original factory. Conversions are dependent on the desired weave pattern and construction of the chair. We can return your chair to its original state or give it new Danish cord, giving it a natural look and tactility not found in other materials.
Structural repairs
Many of the adhesives used in the construction of vintage furniture have not held up well over time, leading to failed joints and broken parts. If your chair or table is wobbly or parts have been damaged, they are usually completely serviceable, and with modern adhesives will last for many years.
Cane Weaving
Hand woven cane seats and shelving are available in a variety of patterns, depending on design. Cane repair is possible and determined on a case-by-case basis. Press cane or sheet cane replacement is also available. A common example of this cane is found on Marcel Breuer’s Cesca chair.
Refinishing
Refinishing services include: Surface damage repairs (scratches, water/heat marks, dents), complete refinishing and spot repairs.
Part Replication
Do you have a part that has been damaged beyond repair? Broken drawer pulls or handles, chair parts, table parts and cabinet bases are just some examples of parts that are viable for reproduction.
